French art in the 19th and 20th centuries defies easy classification. The hallmark of the French School might simply be thought of as brilliant diversity. This is seen in the work of the painters who flourished in Paris as well as the provinces and regional cities from 1840 to 1920. In the 18th century the Paris Salon pretty much ruled and defined everything. This slowly changed in the 19th century when definitions and rules were dropped, changed, abridged or discarded. The idealized landscape, for instance, lasted into the 1820s but soon was replaced by the Barbizon landscape which continued into the 20th century alongside the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist landscape. Academic values in genre scenes were supplanted by Realism and Naturalism. The result of this brilliant diversity can be seen in the collapse of the Paris Salon by the 1890s. But more immediately and specifically it can be seen in the collapse of History Painting and the rise of Popular Realist Genre, Avant-Garde Realist Genre, Symbolism and Expressionism.
